Step-by-step explanation:

Question:-

A father is three times as old as his son. In 12 years time he will be twice as old as his son. Find present ages of father and son.

Answer:-

Given:-

  • father is three times as old as his son.
  • In 12 years time he will be twice as old as his son.

To find:-

  • age of father
  • age of son.

Solution:-

Let the present age of son be x years and present age of father be 3x years

After 12 years,

Son’s age will be (x + 12) years and father’s age will be (3x + 12)

According to the condition,

3x + 12 = 2 (x + 12) 3x + 12 = 2(x + 12)

⇒ 3x + 12 = 2x + 24

⇒ 3x - 2x = 24 - 12

⇒ x = 12

∴ Present age of son is 12 years and Present

age of father is

= 3x = 3 x 12 = 36 years.
