A feed solution of 2 liters was filtered on a filter of 10 cm diameter at pressure drop of
1.6 bar. The filtration time was 16 min and the filtrate viscosity was 2.8 cp. The cake
was found to have a compressibility of 0.4. (a) Calculate the time required to filter
2500 liters of the feed on filter press of total area 2.5 m2 at a pressure drop of 2.8 bar.
Assume the resistance of the filter medium to be negligible. (b) Calculate the total
filtration cycle time for filtering 2500 liters of feed solution. If the cake was washed
with 50 liters of water and cleaning the press at the end of filtration cycle requires 20
minutes. Assume that the cake formed on the filter medium was compressible and the
rate of washing is 1/4th of rate of filtration.
