b= 1 3/4 = 7/4
s = 3/2
now,
area of rectangle is,
a = l x b
area of square is,
a = s x s
where,
l = length
b = breath or width
s = side of square
a = area
hence, the solution is,
not carpeted area = area to be carpeted(l x b) - area carpeted
= (9/4 x 7/4) - (3/2)²
= 27/16
= 16 11/16
