Let the numerator be x and denominator be y.

Case 1:-

(x-1)/y=1/3

Cross Multiplying

y=3x-3        -----   (1)

Case 2:-

x/(y+8)=1/4

Cross Multiplying

4x=y+8

x=(y+8)/4   -----   (2)

Substituting value of y in eq(2)

x=(3x-3+8)/4

4x=3x+5

x=5

Substituting x=5 in eq(1)

y=(3×5)-3

y=15-3

y=12

Therefore x=5 and y=12

So the fraction required is 5/12.
