Given:

The glass refractive index is μ=1.5

The air refractive index is μ'=1

The diameter of sphere is d=4 cm

The radius of the sphere is R=d/2=2 cm

The embedded inside length is u=  1 cm

To find:

The apparent depth of the surface.

Solution:

Applying the refractive index formula

μ'/v -μ/u=(μ' - μ)/R

Putting the above values

1/v-1.5/1=(1-1.5)/2

1/v-1.5=0.5/2

1/v=0.25+1.5

1/v=1.75

v=1/1.75

v=0.57

So the apparent depth is at distance of 0.57
