We can conclude from the revolt of 1857 that it is more than a minor uprising. The Revolt of 1857 was a great challenge to the colonial rule in India. Even though it did not spread all over India and was confined to the northern and central parts of the country, it almost swept away the British rule. The Britishers could quell the Revolt only with the support of the Indian rulers. It was the first massive armed uprising against the British. It is also known as the First War of Independence. After that India entered a new phase of resistance to colonialism which was marked by popular agitations and mass movements. Although the revolt failed, it marked the beginning of a broader struggle against British rule. The perception of Indians and their country was to change the history of India forever. It paved the way for the rise of the modern national movement.
