Let the number of notes is x

Amount of 5 rupees note = 5x

Amount of 10 rupees note = 10x

Amount of 20 rupees note= 20 x

5x + 10x + 20x = 280
35x = 280
x = 280/35
x = 8
Hence
5 rupees Amount = 8 × 5 = Rs 40
10 rupees Amount = 8 × 10 =Rs 80
20 rupees Amount = 8 × 20 = Rs 160

Total numbers of notes he paid is
8 +8 + 8 = 24
