we will use pytha formula ,
the whole scenario forms a triangle ,
ladder is the hypotenuse = 17
distance b/w ground and window is a leg=x
distance b/w ground and ladder is a leg = 8

therefore 
$8^{2}$ + $x^{2}$ = $17^{2}$
x = 15
