A ladder 20m long is placed in a street so as to reach a window of 16m high and on turning the ladder to the other side of the street,it reaches a point 12m high . what is the width of the street? ​

xsquare = 20square - 16square

xsquare = 400 - 256

xsquare = 144

x = √144

base of triangle 1 is 12m

the width of street from one point is 12 m

on turning the ladder to the other side

length of one side = 12 m

hypotenuse = 20 m

xsquare =20square - 12square

xsquare = 400 - 144

x = √256

x = 16

base of triangle 2 is 16m

so, length of street = 16+12

this makes 28 m
