A lady went shopping and spent half of what she had on buying hankies and gave a rupee to a begger waiting outside the shop. She spent half of what was left of what was left on a lunch and followed that up with a two rupee itp. She spent half of the remaining amount on a book and three rupees on bus fare. When she reached home, she found that she had exactly one rupee left. How much money did she start with?

Answer:

Let starting money be x.

Amount she spent on hankies will be \frac{x}{2}

After that she would be left with x- \frac{x}{2} which would be \frac{x}{2}

Now she gave the beggar 1rs. She would be left with  \frac{x}{2}-1

She spent half of remaining money on lunch followed by a tip. So she spent,

\frac{x-2} {\frac{2} 2} -2

Half of that remaining amount was spent on a book and 3rs was spent on the bus fare. (\frac{x-2} {\frac{2} 2} -2) \frac{1}{2}-3

She has 1rs left. so,

(\frac{x-2} {\frac{2} 2} -2) \frac{1}{2} -3=1

\frac{x-2} {\frac{2} 2} -2=8

\frac{x-2} {\frac{2} 2}=10

\frac{x-2}{2}=20

x-2=40

x=42

Hence she had 42 rupees.
