speed is the distance travelled by an object in unit time. velocity is the distance travelled by an object in a given direction in unit time. speed is a scalar quantity. velocity is a vector quantity. speed is always positive or negative but never negative. velocity may be positive zero or negative.

Differences between speed and velocity are-
1) Speed is defined as rate of change of distance where as Velocity is defined as the rate of change of displacement.
2)Speed is scalar quantity but Velocity is vector quantity.
3)Speed is always positive but Velocity can be negative, positive or zero.
