Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion.Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.

DIRECTION :- The distance travelled by a body is the actual length of the path covered by a moving body irrespective of the direction in which the body travels.
DISPLACEMENT :- when a body moves from one position to another , the shortest distance between the initial position and the final position of the body , along with direction , is known as its displacement.
A physical quantity having only magnitude ( or size ) is known as scaler quantity. a scaler quantity gas no direction.
On the other hand
A physical quantity having magnitude as well as direction called vector quantity.

So , distance is a scaler quantity.
