When you are required to calculate the composition of a give element in a compound, all you need to do first is to get the relative formula mass of the compound. For in stance to calculate the percentage composition of a metal element in NaCl, is 23/58.5 x 100 =39.31%

so for this case to calculate equivalent wight of the metal all you need to know is the relative formula mass of metal chloride then use the formula 100-25 =75% of the metal then get 75% of the relative formula mass.
