It occurs in nature as a sulphide ore called Cinnabar (HgS). It is first concentrated or enriched by removing gangue. It is then roasted in presence of excess air to obtain its oxide(HgO). This oxide form of Mercury is then reduced by heat alone to obtain the metal in liquid state.
