Medulla oblongata is the lowest part of the brain, on the lowest portion of the brainstem. It is responsible for vital functions like respiration, peristalsis, etc.

Medulla oblongata connects the brain to the spinal cord. It controls various involuntary actions like heartbeat, breathing, movements of the alimentary canal,etc. Medulla is also the controlling centre for reflexes such as swallowing, coughing, sneezing, secretion of saliva and vomiting.
