A part of monthly hostel charges is fixed and the remaining depends on the number of days one has taken food in the mess. Yash takes food for 25 days. He has to pay Rs.2200 as hostel charges where as Niyati takes food for 20 days. She has to pay Rs.1800 as hostel charges. Find the fixed charges and the cost of food per day.

Let fixed charge = Rs x

Variable charge = Rs y per day

When niyati takes food for 20 days she has to pay Rs 1800 as hostel charges.

so,

x + 20 y = 1800 ------------( 1 )


Yash takes food for 25 days,
pays Rs 2200 as hostel charges.

x + 25y = 2200------------( 2 )

from---------( 1 ) &--------( 2 )

x + 20y = 1800
x + 25y = 2200
-------------------------
-5y = -400
y = 80 [ put in -----( 1 )]

we get,

x + 20(80) = 1800
x = 1800 - 1600
x = 200

thus, x = 200 , y = 80

Hence fixed charge x = Rs 200
And variable charge y = Rs 80.
