given, mass of sugar = 1.71gram

molecular mass of sugar =342 g/mol

so, number of mole of sugar = 1.71/342 = 1/200 = 5 × 10^-3 mol

number of molecule of sugar = number of mole × Avogadro's number

= 5 × 10^-3 × 6.023 × 10²³

= 3.0115 × 10²¹

we know, chemical formula of sugar is C_{12}H_{22}O_{11}. it is clear that one molecule of sugar contains 12 atoms of carbon.

so, total number of carbon atoms in 1.71gm of sugar = number of molecule of sugar × 12

= 3.0115 × 10²¹ × 12

= 36.138 × 10²¹

= 3.6138 × 10²² [answer]
