a rectangular plate of dimensions 6cm *4cm and thickness 2 mm is placed with its largest face flat on the surface of water.what is the downward force on the plate due to surface tension.surface tension of water =7*10_2N/m. if the plate is placed vertically so that the longest side just touches the water find the downward force on the plate.

Answer:

1.4*10^-2 And 8.92* 10^-3

Explanation:

solution;  Surface tension of water, T =7*10 ^-2 N/m

                                        Thickness , t=2 mm =0.002 m

                                              Length, l=6 cm=0.06 m

                                               Breath,b=4 cm=0.04 m

Now,

      F =T *2(l+ b)

         =7*10^ -2 * 2 ( 0.06+0.04)

         =1.4*10^-2 N

Again,

       F=T * 2 (l + t) = 7 * 10 ^-2 * 2 ( 0.06 +0.002)= 8.92 * 10 ^-3 N
