Given data : A rectangular solid block has sides 4cm by 10cm by 20cm and its weight is 40N. It rests on a horizontal flat surface,

To find : calculate the minimum and maximum pressure it exerts.

Solution : As per given data we know that shape of solid block is cuboid. Here we know, opposite site faces of cuboid are equal.

Let, diamension's of solid block as follows :

  • Length of block = 4 cm
  • Width of block = 10 cm
  • Height of block = 40 cm

Force act by solid block to horizantal flat surface is 40 N. We can place the solid block in 3 ways so,

Now, we use formula of pressure,

⟹ Pressure = Force/Area

⟹ Pressure = 40/(length * width)

⟹ Pressure = 40/(4 * 10)

⟹ Pressure = 40/40

⟹ Pressure = 1 pa ----{1}

⟹ Pressure = Force/Area

⟹ Pressure = 40/(length * height)

⟹ Pressure = 40/(4 *40)

⟹ Pressure = 40/160

⟹ Pressure = 0.25 pa ----{2}

⟹ Pressure = Force/Area

⟹ Pressure = 40/(width * height)

⟹ Pressure = 40/(10 * 40)

⟹ Pressure = 40/400

⟹ Pressure = 0.1 pa ----{3}

Answer : Hence, from {1}, {2} and {3} maximum pressure is 1 pa and minimum pressure is 0.1 pa.

[ 1 pa > 0.25 pa > 0.1 pa]
