Profit from 1 pen = Rs 1

Loss from 1 pencil = Rs 0.40

Find the profit from the 45 pens sold:

1 pen = Rs 1

45 pens = 1 x 45 = Rs 45

Find the loss from selling the pencils:

Net Loss = Rs 5

Profit from pen = Rs 45

Loss made from selling the pencils = 5 + 45 = Rs 50

Find the number of pencils sold:

Loss from 1 pencil = Rs 0.40

Number of pencils sold = 50 ÷ 0.40 = 125

Answer: He sold 125 pencils
