The Earth is tilted on its axis. This tilting of the Earth on its axis is known as the inclination of the Earth's axis. It is because of the tilted axis of the Earth that days and nights are of varying lengths in different parts of the Earth. Four main seasons are also caused due to the inclination of the Earth.

Solstice: An event occurring when the sun appear to reach its most northerly and southerly excursion relative to celestial equator on the celestial sphere. Equinoxes: The time when sun crosses the plane of the earth' s equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth.

The two solstices happen in June (20 or 21) and December (21 or 22). These are the days when the Sun's path in the sky is the farthest north or south from the Equator. A hemisphere's winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and its summer solstice the year's longest.

Metamorphism is the change of minerals or geologic texture in pre-existing rocks, without the protolith melting into liquid magma. The change occurs primarily due to heat, pressure, and the introduction of chemically active fluids.
