Cheese became trouble for Jim because it, like oil, makes too much of itself. Its smell spreads everywhere, and gives a cheesy flavour to everything else there. Its odour affects each and everything around.

Once, Tom, one of Jerome's friends, bought a couple of cheeses at Liverpool. Since he was preoccupied with some important work, he requested the narrator to take the cheeses to London. The narrator readily agreed as he wanted to please him.

He had to face a lot of botheration and embarrassment on account of the cheese. The author boarded a crowded train. He got into a compartment where seven people were already sitting. He put the cheeses upon a rack. The strong smell of the cheese spread in the compartment, and one by one the passengers left the compartment. Only a black man was left in the compartment. Even he got down at Crewe and got into another compartment. From Crewe the narrator had the entire compartment to himself, though the train was crowded. As the train stopped at different stations, the people, seeing his empty carriage, would rush for it, carrying heavy bags, and would fight at the door to get in first. As they opened the door and mount the steps, they would stagger back because of the pervading stink in the carriage.

He got rid of the cheese by dumping at Tom’s house; though Tom’s wife also did not want to keep the smelly cheese at home, Jerome managed to convince her that he could not keep the cheese at his home for the sake of Mrs. Poppet’s comfort.

• They have decided to not bring the cheese with them on the trip due to its strong smell. He also remembered some of the incidents which happened with his friends while carrying cheese.
• The smell of the cheese made the horse run faster, the smell of the cheese left people shifting to another bogie of the train, even his wife hated the smell of the cheese. All the above incidents made the narrator determined to not carry cheese in his trip.
