A small quantity of light green coloured substance is heated in the beginning it loses some water and then suffocating gas is evolved and a red Residue is left Behind name the red Residue and write its formula and name the suffocating gas and write its formula and name the light green coloured substance and its formula what is the type of reaction and takes place during heating

The light green substance is hydrated Ferrous Sulphate and it's formulae is :

FeSO₄. 7H₂O

When it is heated it first loses its water of crystallization as shown in the reaction below.

FeSO₄. 7H₂O —Heat—> FeSO₄ + 7H₂O

On further heating the FeSO₄ decomposes to form Iron (iii) Oxide, SO₂ gas and SO₃ gas in the reaction below :

FeSO₄ —Heat—Fe₂O₃(red Residue) + SO₂ + SO₃

The choking gas is SO₂ and SO₃

The red Residue is iron (iii) Oxide.

Thus type of reaction is known as :

Thermal decomposition.
