The specific gravity of the solid material is equal to 1.375

Weight of the body in water = 5N

Weight of the body in oil of relative density 0.85 = 7N

Density of water = 1000 Kg/m³

Density of oil = 850 Kg/m³

Let density of body be x , v is the volume and g is acceleration due to gravity.

Weight in water = (x-1000)vg = 5 N

=> vg = 5/(x-1000)

Weight in oil = (x-850)vg = 7N

=> vg = 7/(x-850)

Comparing the two values of vg , we get

=> 7/(x-850) = 5/(x-1000)

=> 7x - 7000 = 5x - 4250

=> 2x = 2750

=> x = 1375

Density of the solid = 1375 Kg/m³

Relative density = density of solid / density of water

=> 1375/1000

=> 1.375
