Sound wave travels 339 m in 1 second. In 1 second it will cover 339/0.015 many wavelengths. So frequency is 22600 Hz which will not be audible as humans can hear from 20-20kHz.

Your question

A sound wave travels at a speed of 339 m s-1. If its wavelength is 1.5 cm , what is the frequency of the wave ?

Will it be audible ?

Your answer ,

Given ,

  • Speed of the sound wave = 339 m / s

  • Wavelength of the sound wave = 1.5 cm

Converting the value of wavelength of sound wave into metres ,

So ,

  • Sound wave's wavelength = 1.5 cm
  • = 1.5 / 100 = 0.015 metres

Now ,

  • We can find frequency of sound wave easily by the formula ,

  • Frequency = Velocity / Wavelength

  • Frequency = 339 / 0.015 ( m / ms )

  • Frequency = 22.6 kHz or 22600 Hz

Also this sound wave isn't in the range of frequency for human is 20 Hz to 20000 Hz or 20 kHz.

  • The given sound wave has frequency = 22.6 kHz which is more than 20 kHz , So this it willn't be audible for human.
