The law of refraction of light that defines the refractive index of one medium with respect to other medium is Snell's law of refraction.
According to this law,
The ratio of some of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refraction is a constant, for the light of a given colour and given pair of medium.
If i is the angle of incidence and r is the angle of refraction, then
sini/sinr = constant = n21
Sin of a angle of incidence/some of angle of refraction = constant.
The constant value n21 is three optical property of the two media and is called refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1.
