A steamer goes downstream from one point to another in 7 hours, it covers the same distance upstream in 8 hours. If the speed of the stream will be 2km/hr, find the speed of the steamer in still water and the distance between the points.

let the speed of the streamer be x km/hr
speed of stream = 2km/hr
it is given that the streamer takes 7 hours while going down stream
therefore,speed of the streamer downstream = (x+2)km/hr
distance covered in 1hour = (x+2)km
distance covered in 7hrs = 7(x+2)km...............................(I)
it is given while going upstream the streamer takes 8hrs
the speed of the streamer in upstream=(x-2)km/hr
distance covered in 1 hour = (x-2)km
distance covered in 8 hours = 8(x-2) km.........................(ii)
from (i) and (ii) we got
7(x+2) = 8(x-2)
x = 30
therefore the speed of the streamer = 30km/hr
the distance between the two points is ,
speed of the streamer upstream = (30-2) km/hr
distance covered in 8hrs = 8(30-2)km
= (240-16)km
therefore the distance between the two points is 224 kilometres.
