A Steamer goes downstream from one port to another in 9 hour. It cover the same distance upstream in 10 hour is the speed of a stream be 1 km/hr .find the speed of stream in still water and the distance between the ports.

Let the speed of the stream be x

Speed of the stream = 1km/hr ( given)

then,

Speed of downstream = ( x + 1 ) km/hr

Speed of Upstream = ( x - 1 ) km/hr

Time taken to travel downstream is 9 hours.

Distance covered in downstream\bf\:= 9 ( x + 1 ).........(i)

Time taken to travel upstream is 10 hours.

Distance covered in upstream \bf\:= 10 ( x - 1 ).........(ii)

equating equations (i) and (ii),we get

\bf\implies\:9(x+1)=10(x-1)

\bf\implies\:9x+9=10x-10

\bf\implies\:9+10=10x-9x

\bf\implies\:19=x

Therefore, Speed of streamers = 19 km/hr

Then,

Distance\bf\:=9(x+1)............(From\:eq\:i )

Distance \bf\:= 9(19+1)

Distance \bf\:=9\times\:20

Distance \bf\:= 180\:km

Hence, the distance between two ports is 180 km
