Let n be the number of cheaper calculators. Then

n*2.95 + 40*8.20 = 387

n*2.95 = 387 - 40*8.20

n = (387 - 40*8.20)/2.95

n = 20

Teacher bought 20 cheaper calculators

Solution:

Let n be the number of cheaper calculators

Cost of each cheaper calculator = $ 2.95

Then, cost of "n" cheaper calculators = 2.95n

A teacher bought 40 calculators at $8.20 each

Cost of 40 calculators = 40 x 8.20 = 328

In all he spent $387

Therefore,

2.95n + 328 = 387\\\\2.95n = 387-328\\\\2.95n = 59\\\\n = 20

Thus he bought 20 cheaper calculators
