A test to determine the hardness of water:

  • A required things to test the harness of water is Soap,three test tubes,tap water,ground water and distilled water.
  • Take test tube 1 and add tap water and 10-12 drops of the soap solution in it.
  • Repeat the above steps with other ground and distilled water.
  • Now shake all the test tubes one by one.
  • You will find that the test tube having  the distilled water and tap water will form a Lather.
  • Whereas the test tube containing ground water does no form Lather.
  • So,we can conclude that those substances which form Lather with he soap solutions are hard.
  • Lather is an insoluble compound.
