(a) The refractive index of Ruby is 1.71. What is meant by this statement?
(b) The refractive index of some medium are given below:
Crown glass - 1.52
Water - 1.33
Sapphire - 1.77
In which of the medium is the speed of light
(i) maximum
(ii) minimum (c) Calculate speed of light in sapphire.

Answer:

it means the Bendness ( refractive index) of Ruby is 1.71. the maximum speed of light is in water. because which speed of light is more the refractive index is less.. the speed of light is maximum in sapphire .. the refractive index is so less.

Explanation:

because in sapphire has refractive index is maximum, so light speed is less..

Explanation:

this statement means that light travels slower in ruby as compared to the speed of light in vacuum

(I) in water speed of light is maximum becoz it has a low retroactive index

(ii) in sapphire speed of light is minimum

(c)refractive index of sapphire =

1.77=3×10^8m/s/v2

V2=3×10^8m/s/1.77

V2=1.69×10^8m/s

therefore speed of light in sapphire=1.59×10^8m/s
