On transition from left to right across a period, the ionization potential of elements increases. As a result, on moving from left to right, the tendency of losing electrons decreases and tendency of gaining electrons increases. Morover, the atomic size reduces due to which more amount of energy has to be spent to remove an electron from the outermost shell. Therefore, the metallic character decreases and non-metallic character increases on moving left to right across a period. Hope this helps!!
