A water tank has an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is capable of filling the tank in 20min and the outlet is capable of emptying the tank in 40 minutes. When the inlet was opened to fill the empty tank, the person did not notice that the outlet was open. So both the inlet and the outlet were open. In how much time will the tank be just filled?

Given,

  • Inlet = 20 min = 1/20
  • Outlet = -40 min = -1/40 (Going out will be negative)

Hence,

\boxed{\bold{Work \:done = Inlet + Outlet}}

\implies\bold{Work\:done=\frac{1}{20}-\frac{1}{40}}

\implies\bold{Work\:done=\frac{1}{40}}

Hence,

\boxed{\bold{\therefore{\:Tank \:will \:get \:filled \:in \:40 \:minutes}}}
