a. What is the minimum number of point-to-point WANs that are needed to connect n LANs if each LAN should be able to communicate with any other LAN?

  • Each P2P WAN requires two ip addresses
  • Each and every LAN should be connected to (n - 1) LANS. This is factor that we have n x (n - 1) connections.
  • Initial LAN’s had data rates in the 4 to 16 Mbps range. Today, speeds are normally 100 or 1000 Mbps. Transmission delay is very short in a LAN. The smallest LAN may only use two computers, while larger LANs can have thousands of computers.
