(a) With the help of a labelled diagram, explain how a concave lens diverges a beam of parallel light rays. Mark the principal axis, optical centre, principal focus and focal length of the concave lens on the diagram.
(b) State whether concave lens has a real focus or a virtual focus.
(c) List some things that concave lens and concave mirror have in common.

Explanation:

(a) When a concave lens has a parallel beam of light rays, After passing via the lens the lights spread (or differ). Since the refracted rays diverge from each other, they do not actually meet at a certain level. The diverging rays appear to meet on the left hand side of the lens when produced backwards at one point F called the main focus.

 (b) A concave lens has a simulated focus because the light rays are not passing through the focus.

(c) Little that is common to both a concave lens and a convex mirror is as follows:

  • All diverge a single luminous ray.
  • All form an all-time virtual image.
  • Both have an emphasis on virtuality.
