(a) Write the scientific name of the organism Thomas Hunt Morgan and his colleagues worked with for their experiments. Explain the correlation between linkage and recombination with respect to genes as studied by them.
(b) How did Sturtevant explain gene mapping while working with Morgan?
Answers
Drosophila melanogaster
Correlation between linkage and recombination with respect to genes:
• Morgan carried out various dihybrid cross in drosophila to study genes that were sex - linked.
• Morgan hybridised yellow bodied , white eyed females to brown bodied, red - eyed males and intercrossed their progeny ,
• and observed the two genes did not segregate independently to each other and deviated from F2 hybrid cross.
• Morgan concluded this was due to physical association or linkage of two genes located on a chrormosome and gave the term "recombination", some genes were tightly linked and were not able to segregate properly having low parental recombination.
• alfred Strutvent frequency recombination :
• he used frequency of recombination between gene pairs on the same chromosome , as a measure to find out the distance between genes and created a map to locate their position on chromosome.
• nowdays these maps are extensively used in various human gemome projects
