The phrase ' his bars of rage ' implies the helpless a bird feels when he is caged , but not by a cage but his anger . In this poem Maya Angelou's main message was that a free bird can go to anywhere it wants itself to be , but it is not the same case for a caged bird . A caged bird will neither have the liberty of experiencing the happy feeling of flying in the sky or any other feeling to be precise because it is in the clutches of it's own anger . A caged bird will not be able to think or experience anything beyond the cage of anger and helplessness it has created on it's own due to not having the liberty to do the one thing it loves the most , which is flying . Hence the phrase ' his bars of rage ' implies not being able to feel anything beyond rage , the word cage being used to show not being able to go beyond some kind of boundary, which in this case is rage .
