Given info : Abhi sold an article after giving a discount of 20% and earned a profit of 60%. Had he given a discount of 12%. He would have earned rs 32 more.

To find : The selling price of article if abhi wants to earn a profit of 160 % , is ..

solution : method 1 : if 20 % discount , abhi gets 60 % profit.

if 12 % discount, abhi gets (60 % + Rs. 32) profit.

so, (20 - 12)% = 60 % + 32 - 60 %

⇒8 % = 32

⇒100% = 32/8 × 100 = 400

so, marked price was 400 Rs.

now to gain profit, 160 %

seeking price = 400 + 160% of 400

= 400 + 640

= 1040 Rs.

method 2 : let marked price is x

after discount 20% ,

selling price = x - 20% of x = 4x/5

after discount 12 %,

selling price = x - 12% of x = 22x/25

given, 22x/25 - 4x/5 = (60% + 32) - (60%) = 32

⇒2x/25 = 32

⇒x = 16 × 25 = 400

now, selling price = 400 + 160% of 400 = 1040
