“Academic excellence is the only requirement for a successful career.” Write a debate either for or against the motion. (120 – 150 words)
Respected Chairperson, Honourable, Members of the Jury and my worthy opponents. Good morning to you all.
Today, I Jayati, stand before you to speak against the motion that “Academic excellence is the only requirement for a successful career”. The pressure of today’s fast paced life has burdened us to do better and better academically and peer pressure, our parents and teachers as well reinforce this on us again and again. In our society grades and numbers rule the future of a child. This undue pressure drags a student towards a life of monotony and stress. But in my opinion, to have a successful career and a content life, the most important thing is to pursue one’s passion. There are so many options like music, dance and sports, etc. which have a very bright future if pursued with dedication and perseverance. Sports in India, have a great future but to become a proficient sportsperson, one has to be passionate about that particular sport and work hard with an undeterred determination. And the same applies to the genre of music and dance as career options. To be academically sound and have a degree is important but to have undue pressure to make a career choice with something which is not of one’s interest can make a person depressed and dull.
I would like to conclude by saying that academic excellence is not the only requirement for a successful career, one has to be passionate about whatever one is doing.
Explanation:
Respected Chairperson, honorable judges and all present here,
I stand before you to express my views against the motion that ‘Academic excellence is the only requirement for a successful career’. Sourav Ganguly, Saina Nehwal, Zakir Hussain, Deepika Padukone, all of these are names that we all know. Are any of them related to the field of education? No! They have pursued their dreams in their respective fields and today they stand as role models for the youth. Education is not only about bookish knowledge. It is about the overall development of our personality. We study many subjects in our school. But do we excel in all of them? No! We excel in some of them. Similarly, the potential of the students, lies not only in excelling in their studies. Somebody can be an average student but may be an excellent dancer or an artist. We should not judge a child’s capability only on the basis of their marks. We should try to bring out the inner talent of the child and nurture it so that the child can do what she/he likes. The goal of education is to raise the leaders of tomorrow”. But my question is, How is it that most of the leaders of today happen to be college dropouts? This is because having degrees cannot ensure success. It fails to impart life skills and polish the personality of an individual. They can surely give you an overview of a subject but fail to provide an overview of how the world works. It does not ensure skills and competencies. It tells people what to think instead of how to think and the result is that society now has just robots who have switched their minds off only to believe what is being taught.
One’s attitude towards life is what brings success. Undoubtedly, academic Excellencies can provide you degrees or may even land you a job, but, your success depends upon how you think, behave, walk, talk and present yourself. It has been rightly said,
“Education produces great employees in the market, not employers”.
Thank you.
