Radish, carrot and sweet potato have a common origin, that is they have common ancestory. The structures which are similar in origin but perform different functions are homologous structures or organs. These all are roots but they also perform same function of storage of food. If we study them apart from their common structure, common ancestory or common origin, at molecular level the term homology describes the DNA or proteins that share a common evolutionary origin. Although they perform the same functions but in all other aspects of homology, it is correct to call them homologous in general terms but at molecular level these are Orthologous structures.
