Account for the following:
1 Be(OH), is amphoteric while Mg(OH), is basic.
(1) Be(OH)2 is insoluble but Ba(OH), is fairly soluble in
[HOTS]

Be ( OH )₂ , is amphoteric while Mg ( OH )₂, is basic it is because of the ionization enthalpy of Mg-OH bond can break more easily in Mg ( OH )₂ in comparison of Be ( OH )₂ .

Be ( OH )₂ is insoluble but Ba ( OH )₂ is fairly solution in water because with the increase in size from Be to Ba , the lattice enthalpy decrease. Also hydration enthalpy remain almost constant.
