The epiglottis is normally pointed upward during breathing with its underside functioning as part of the pharynx. During swallowing, elevation of the hyoid bone draws the larynx upward; as a result, the epiglottis folds down to a more horizontal position, with its superior side functioning as part of the pharynx.

epiglottis is a thin leaf shaped flap like structure which is present in the throat at the top of the larynx.
when the food is swallowed ,this flap like structure called epiglottis covers the windpipe so that food does not enter the wind pipes and then to the lungs.
