Outbreak in late December 2019, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc across the globe and like any critical sector, education has been hit hard. Students, schools, colleges and universities are deeply affected. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), 800 million learners worldwide are affected.

Globally, more than 200,000 cases of the coronavirus have been reported in more than 160 countries, leading to more than 8,000 deaths and several states dealing with severe outbreaks. The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the progress made by some governments in increasing the education budget. Therefore, it is a crisis that requires urgent attention and collective action by all governments, stakeholders and communities.

Every day millions of children do not go to school due to emergencies and ongoing humanitarian crises.

The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) calls on national governments and donors to:

- To prioritize education as the first step in all emergency responses with immediate effect and to include education in their COVID-19 response policies.

-To dedicate adequate resources, finance and technology to ensure the right to free, quality public education for all during the Covid-19 crisis.

To increase financial assistance and support to education in crisis by at least 4.2% of emergency aid commensurate with its needs.

To reduce pressure on teachers, schools and school systems are open or volunteer to provide additional support.
