The advantages are that the animal moves to a more habitable and/or resource rich habitat. The disadvantages are the metabolic cost of moving in itself in addition to the risk of encountering conflict with a conspecific/heterospecific, or being preyed on. This is why many animals only migrate at a very specific point in development and/or during a particular time of year.
