Advantages and disadvantages of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
TENS is a noval method of pain management without any administration of medicine. This can be extensively used in labour to alleviate the pain.
The TENS machine is a battery-operated machine with wires connecting two or four electrodes to be stuck to the skin. The amount of electrical impulses passed to the body can be controlled.
It works either by blocking pain signals or by stimulating the release of endorphins, the natural pain relievers in our body.

- May provide relief only during early labor
- Not recommended for use in water, so cannot be used during bath/shower or water births
- Not to be used by patients suffering from epilepsy or cardiac diseases (especially with pace maker)
