here is your answer
first advantage............
1 Freight carrying capacity by water is more than ten folds higher than carrying capacity by road.
2Fuel consumption per unit weight is very low
Operating cost per unit weight is very low
If the same quantity of goods are transported by road, green house gas emissions will be way higher than water transportation
3 Depending on the depth of the port variable capacities of vessels can be employed
Due to low operating costs and fuel consumption, international trade is comparatively cheaper.
4 Water is slow and if there is a serious accident, total loss of all the cargo is a real possibility. In terms of fuel consumption / energy inputs - water is between land & air - cheaper than air, but more expensive than land.
5 Land transportation requires minimal energy inputs, but it is limited in that the largest size of load is still relatively small compared to water transportation.
6 For extremely large loads ( size or weight ) - water is not only the best - it is often the only option.
7 One exciting new development that may offset this in the future - some industries are experimenting with modern dirigibles. If this catches on, very large loads could be carried relatively quickly ( much faster than water ). This might well prove to be even cheaper that land transport. The one big disadvantage to dirigibles is that they are not well suited to bulky loads ( dimensionally large ) and they are too dangerous to fly in any kind of wind.
