1 -a loud explosive noise caused by the shock wave from an aircraft or other object travelling faster than the speed of sound is called sonic boom.
2- it is caused by shock waves created by the object.

Sonic boom ;
When a body moves with a speed which is greater than the speed of sound in air, it is said to be travelling at supersonic speed.
Jet fighters, bullets , etc., often travel at supersonic speeds. And when they do, they produce a sharp, loud sound called a sonic boom.
The sonic boom produced by by supersonic aircraft is accompanied by waves that have enough energy to shatter glass and even damage buildings. People living near the airbases of supersonic jets may also suffer from hearing loss.
