Plants perform photosynthesis  in the presence of sunlight during day. In the process of photosynthesis plants take in CO2 and give out oxygen. But during night, they do not perform photosynthesis but respire .We know that in the process of respiration oxygen is taken in and CO2 is given out

Hence, plants give out oxygen during day and carbon dioxide during night.

avelinteresa: During day time, as the rate of photosynthesis is more than the rate of respiration, the net result is evolution of oxygen. At night there is no photosynthesis, so they give out carbon dioxide due to respiration.

The plants perform photosynthesis during day time in presence of sunlight and it give oxygen and in night there is no sunlight so they can't perform photosynthesis. So plants gives O2 during day time and CO2 during night time.
