Vitamin B-12 is just one of several B vitamins that powers your metabolism, helping your system pull energy from the foods you eat. You also need B-12 to produce new red blood cells, to support your neurological system and to create and repair all of the genetic information within cells. While you only need a very small amount of B-12 each day, you can take extra without having any adverse effects.

The majority of vitamins and minerals have an established tolerable upper intake level, or UL, set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine. This amount is the maximum dosage of the nutrient you should have in a given day, from a combination of both supplements and diet. Frequently going over the UL for some vitamins and minerals could lead to severe health complications. But because vitamin B-12 isn’t likely to cause serious adverse effects in healthy people, it does not have a tolerable upper intake level.
