Although Nicola and Jacopo are young boys, the author refers to them as gentlemen. Why does he do so?

Although,Nicola and Jacopo were young, but they displayed quite maturity far beyond their years.Their dedication towards work is like a gentlemen or even far more than them. They never hesitate to do any of kind work , whether it is paper selling or as a guide, they always used to work hard .Even when the author ask them where did they spend their money, they are hesitant and display reluctance. They aldo never complaints about their misfortune to anyone, instead they work hard and earn money.Thus the author termed them as gentlemen.
